Belize’s Shrimp Industry Opens Doors to Taiwan Market
Belize’s shrimp producers can now export to Taiwan following a new export agreement signed last week. Taiwan is one of the world’s largest shrimp importers, offering a valuable boost to Belize’s recovering shrimp industry.
A decade ago, Early Mortality Syndrome devastated shrimp farms, but improved sanitation technology since 2023 has helped control the disease. Alvin Anderson, Managing Director of Royal Mayan Shrimp Farm, called Taiwan “a coveted market” with “stringent standards” but great potential for Belize’s shrimp.
Senior Trade Economist Berisford Codd said, “This is a great opportunity for us to ramp up production and tap into that high value market.” The Belize Agricultural Health Authority ensured compliance with Taiwan’s strict food safety rules through regular audits and monitoring.
Though Taiwan can absorb all Belize’s shrimp, Codd stressed more investment is needed to increase production. Anderson urged a cautious, gradual market entry to protect Belize’s reputation.
Belize’s seafood is already familiar to Taiwan, which imports lobster from the country.
