Belize’s Shrimp Industry Stages a Comeback, Cabinet Says

Belize’s shrimp industry is bouncing back after years of devastation, according to Cabinet, which took note this week of the sector’s recovery from the Early Mortality Syndrome disease that once decimated production.

Cabinet applauded the turnaround, pointing to production figures that have tripled since 2020 and an economic value to the Belizean economy that has climbed to nearly twenty-five million dollars.

The government credits the rebound to a combination of factors, including the adoption of faster-growing genetics, new investment flowing into the industry, and an expansion of farmed pond acreage using intensive production systems. Cabinet expects those gains to continue driving growth in the sector, alongside a revival of shrimp exports to markets in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Taiwan.
