Belmopan on Edge as Crime Surge Prompts Crackdown

A surge in violent crime has put Belmopan on edge, prompting swift action from authorities. Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira says recent robberies and a murder in the capital are very alarming and vows that police will use every resource to crack down on offenders. Mira warns that families shielding criminals will not deter law enforcement, as Special Branch and CIB have been instructed to pursue justice aggressively.

“It is very alarming and as I sat with the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers I made it known that Belmopan is not like that. WE need to make sure we put every resource we have to solve those robberies and murder. I think the Belize Police Department has gone overtime to investigate and have sufficient evidence to arrest and charge. We cannot allow and I will not allow anybody to come to Belmopan and think they can get away with robberies or any other murder in the capital city and I want to warn them and the families. Most of the time the families are the ones protecting these people. Most of the time the families benefit and they protect and go on social media and the media and say my son does not do this and that, and that he is a little thief and do a robbery here and there and he is not a murderer I don’t know why you are treating him that type of way. Well, let me say something, the police department will come very hard. And I have instructed Special Branch and CIB to do everything they can.”
