Benque Mayor Urges Road Safety Amid Rising Traffic

Tonight, the Mayor of Benque Viejo is sounding the alarm on road safety. Jorge Rosales says the town council has been working hard, raising awareness and enforcing traffic rules, but the message isn’t getting through. He points to pedestrians, especially students, who continue to misuse the roadways, putting themselves in danger. And with traffic on the rise, the risk is even greater. But Mayor Rosales says the biggest offenders are taxi drivers, whose reckless use of the roads is making a bad situation worse.

“The taxi drivers are on a time bomb on their own timing and they don’t really respect students or the pedestrians walking around town. So, the taxi drivers have to be very careful here in Benque. And what they do is insult you. They insult anyone that get in their way. They are here to do a public service and they are the ones that need to know the traffic regulations and laws and they should know it by heart because they are public servants. This is a taxi driver going on one side, on the right hand side, overtaking on the right-hand side. This video is on the border area. If this happens here in Benque, how many children can get in an accident or sustain injuries?”
