Blue Economy Minister Andre Perez Hits Back: ‘No Mismanagement at Hol Chan’

Minister of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation and Area Representative of Belize Rural South, Andre Perez, has rejected claims of financial mismanagement at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. He called the recent allegations “false, unfounded, and irresponsible.”

“Since assuming oversight in November 2020, there has been no embezzlement, misappropriation, or misuse of funds at Hol Chan Marine Reserve,” Perez said. “All financial operations are conducted in accordance with established governance, oversight, and audit procedures.”

On Thursday, the ACCSD raised concerns over the sudden removal of the Chair of the Board of Trustees and her replacement by the current Lions Club Chair. ACCSD also questioned how community representation is being maintained and called for a full six-year independent financial audit.

ACCSD said, “The lack of transparency surrounding this decision raises significant questions about whether the Statutory Instrument governing Hol Chan is being properly followed.” The group pointed out that the reserve was established to include “openness, accountability, and genuine community involvement.”

Perez said the accusations were politically motivated and lacked evidence. “Those making such allegations are challenged to present verifiable facts, rather than engage in speculation for political mileage,” he said.

He added that his leadership took over Hol Chan reserve in November 2020, nearly bankrupt and burdened by debt. “Hol Chan Marine Reserve today is stronger, solvent, and thriving” after five years, Perez added.
