BNTU Calls for End to Discriminatory Hair Policies

The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) has declared its support for the UBAD Educational Foundation (UEF) in calling for an end to discriminatory hair policies in schools.

In a statement, the union said, “The BNTU stands in solidarity with UBAD Educational Foundation against discriminatory hair policies in schools… We are deeply concerned by reports of students being reprimanded, suspended, or otherwise penalised for wearing hairstyles that reflect their heritage or religious beliefs.”

The new academic year began on Monday, and once again reports of discrimination surfaced. At Anglican Cathedral College, a student reported receiving a letter informing their parents that they were in breach of the school’s Attire and Personal Appearance Policy for wearing hair extensions.

UEF chairperson YaYa Marin Coleman, who usually leads a protest walk from Ladyville to the Ministry of Education in Belize City, redirected her walk to the school after learning of the incident. Coleman met with the principal, who reportedly insisted the school was adhering to its policy.

In response, the Teacher’s Union urged “all educational institutions to review and revise their grooming policies to ensure they are free from racial, cultural, and gender bias. Policies must be rooted in respect, not control.” It also called on the Ministry of Education to provide clear guidance protecting students’ rights to self-expression and cultural identity.
