Boca Loca Brings Sweet, Sour, and Spicy Belizean Treats to Open Your Eyes
A Taste of Nostalgia with a Bold Twist
Today’s episode of Open Your Eyes featured Boca Loca, a local Belizean business serving up a colorful mix of sweet, sour, tangy, and spicy treats inspired by familiar childhood snacks. Founder Lupita Zetina and business partner Migdalia Mendez joined the show to share the story behind their venture and demonstrate some of their signature creations.
Boca Loca began after the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to earn extra income while offering Belizeans something different. The business combines locally sourced fruits, candies, homemade chamoy sauce, and a special Tajín-inspired spice mix to create its signature “crazy desserts.”
Fresh Fruit Meets Sweet, Sour, and Spicy Flavors
During the segment, the hosts got a closer look at some of Boca Loca’s popular treats, including its signature Pica Fresa, green apples coated in tamarind paste and layered with bold flavors, as well as chamoy-covered gummies, pineapple, watermelon, and dried fruit creations.
The founders explained that many of their products are prepared by hand, one piece at a time, using fresh ingredients. Their homemade chamoy sauce is a key component across the menu, adding the distinctive tangy kick that sets their treats apart. Viewers also saw the hosts put the flavors to the test, with Asani sampling the creations despite not usually being a fan of sweets.
Building a Business Through Customer Connection
For Lupita and Migdalia, the most rewarding part of the business is seeing customers enjoy their products and receiving feedback that helps them improve. They shared that their treats appeal to both children and adults, with some customers drawn to the nostalgic flavors and others eager to try something new.
Balancing Boca Loca with their regular weekday jobs means the founders currently prepare most orders on Saturdays and Sundays. They encourage customers to order in advance, with pickups arranged ahead of time and shipments sent out on Thursdays. The business has even received orders from as far south as Punta Gorda.
Bringing the Flavor to More Belizeans
As Boca Loca continues to grow, the founders are working toward making their treats available on more days of the week. For now, customers can find their contact information and place orders through the business’s social media pages.
With its combination of local fruit, homemade sauces, bold seasoning, and childhood nostalgia, Boca Loca is giving Belizeans a new way to enjoy the sweet, sour, and spicy flavors that make every bite memorable.
