BREAKING: “Possible Embezzlement” at Immigration Offices
The Ministry of Immigration has launched internal reviews into alleged financial irregularities at the Belize City Immigration Department Office in Belize City, including reports of possible embezzlement of public funds.
The Ministry said preliminary investigations are underway to determine the nature and extent of any wrongdoing. Officials stressed that matters involving public funds, accountability, and integrity are being treated with “the utmost seriousness.”
The statement said, “At this stage, investigations remain ongoing to determine the nature and extent of any possible wrongdoing.”
According to the Ministry, if evidence confirms criminal activity, authorities will move forward with a full financial audit and refer the matter to the Belize Police Department for criminal investigation.
At the same time, separate internal reviews at the Belmopan Immigration Office uncovered two missing Nationality Certificates. “The Ministry has collected internal reports related to the matter and will be making an official report to the Belize Police Department this week to facilitate a formal investigation. So far it has not been determined if the two missing certificates are a result of misprint, lost or stolen,” the statement said.
The developments come as the Ministry continues efforts to modernize the nationality application system. Earlier this year, officials launched a consultancy focused on digitizing the nationality process, a move aimed at improving accountability, strengthening monitoring systems, and reducing vulnerabilities such as missing certificates.
The Ministry says it will not provide further details while investigations remain active and preliminary.
