BTL Says Protestors Were Trespassers

Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) has condemned what it described as “unlawful trespassing” by protestors at its Saint Thomas Street headquarters in Belize City earlier today.

The protest, which was led by the United Democratic Party (UDP) and joined by the NTCUB and its members, was held in response to BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited (SMART).

In a statement, BTL said that while it supports lawful protest, some individuals entered the compound without authorization and resisted police efforts to remove them. The protest coincided with a scheduled meeting of the company’s Board of Directors, which BTL said was disrupted.

“BTL categorically condemns the unlawful occupation of BTL’s premises by trespassers who have sought to disrupt BTL’s legitimate business operations,” the statement read.

The company said the Board was meeting to discuss internal human resources matters, including a severance decision issued by the Caribbean Court of Justice on November 5, 2025. It described the attempt to disrupt the meeting as “regrettable and counterproductive”.

BTL added that it would not tolerate intimidation or unlawful entry, stating that board meetings would continue as scheduled. Directors “yielding to intimidation would constitute a breach of their duties to exercise independent judgement and would be contrary to the interests of BTL and BTL’s shareholder,” the statement said.
