Bus Driver Served Notice after Fatal Belmopan Collision

Police are investigating the fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of 18-year-old student Jonni Cano of Stann Creek District. The crash happened around 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, at the intersection of Saint Jude and Saint Matthews Streets in the San Martin area of Belmopan.

Police confirmed that a Westline bus collided with a Skygo motorcycle carrying Cano and another student, 18-year-old Jamin Patt. Both were flung from the motorcycle.

Both students were taken to Western Regional Hospital for treatment. Cano succumed to his injuries; meanwhile, Patt remains in a stable condition.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said, “No alcohol testing has been done. We have actually recovered video footage of the incident, which we believe will help us in this investigation.”

23-year-old Jonathan Estrada of San Ignacio Town has since been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.
