Business Chamber Condemns Killing of Delivery Driver

The Business Chamber of Spanish Lookout has strongly condemned the recent wave of robberies targeting delivery drivers across Belize, following the fatal shooting of Caribbean Chicken driver Mark Gabourel on Wednesday.

The Chamber described the attacks as “senseless” and said they threaten not only individuals trying to earn an honest living but also commerce, public safety, and national stability.

“This tragic loss of life underscores the alarming escalation of violence and lawlessness facing hardworking Belizeans. No one should have to fear for their life simply for doing their job,” the statement read.

The Chamber urged the Government of Belize, law enforcement, and the justice system to take swift and coordinated action to apprehend those responsible, bring them to justice, and restore confidence in public safety. It also called for increased patrols, targeted enforcement, and meaningful consequences for violent offenders.

The Business Chamber expressed solidarity with Cabourne’s family, coworkers, and all delivery personnel who face daily risks while keeping the economy moving, emphasizing that “the protection of lives and livelihoods must be treated as a national priority.”

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Mountain View Boulevard in Belmopan. Gabourel, who was accompanied by a 15-year-old helper, was exiting a compound when two men on a motorcycle fired several shots at the truck. Gabourel was struck, and the assailants fled after failing to open the truck door.

He was taken to the Western Regional Hospital, where he later died.
