Cabinet Pressed to Prioritize Domestic Violence Response

When we spoke with Education Minister Oscar Requena this afternoon in Belize City, he also shared his heartbreak over the tragic loss of lives in San Felipe. Two of the victims, siblings Tishan Godoy and Shadia Magaña, were students at different schools. Requena says Cabinet must now make it a priority to ensure victims of domestic violence get the support they need to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.

“First of all I want to say my deepest condolences tot eh families affected. It is indeed a tragedy. It is sad to see the way our students perished. Our hearts are with the family. As a country this is time for us to take stock and to look at the reality of how domestic violence affects our women and children. Certainly we need to be very clear in moving forward that we are going to put together the necessary policies and legislations and support to ensure that our women or children or anyone, because we also know of cases of violence against men, that these persons have an avenue to seek support in advance so that we do not see a reoccurrence of this unfortunate incident.
