Cabinet Talks Islands, Roads, and Rights
Cabinet met on Tuesday and approved several measures that could affect everything from island tourism to road safety and human rights.
Tourism on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro was one of the first items discussed. After reviewing a rapid assessment of challenges affecting visitor experiences, Cabinet agreed that action is needed to protect the long-term health of tourism on the islands. Ministers approved the development of a detailed plan and committed to setting aside funds for what were described as “priority improvements”.
Cabinet also received updates from Belize’s International Cooperation Council and outcomes from its recent Partners’ Conference, where the focus was on turning Belize’s green transition plans into investment-ready projects.
On human rights, Cabinet noted steps being taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to establish a National Human Rights Institution. A new project, “Advancing Human Rights in Belize: Establishing a National Human Rights Institution”, will be launched soon.
And for anyone frustrated with reckless drivers, Cabinet announced new bills will be introduced at today’s House sitting, which will give traffic officers more power to enforce traffic rules. The proposed legislation is aimed at improving public safety on roads and highways across the country.
