Cabinet is opening the floor to the stakeholders at the centre of the BTL-Speednet controversy, inviting each side to make its case directly before deciding where government stands on the proposed acquisition.

The first round of presentations is happening today, with the Belize Social Security Board, the Public Utilities Commission, and BTL itself set to address Cabinet. News Five is in Belmopan.

A second round follows on Thursday, when the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize will get their turn to present.

Once all parties have been heard, Cabinet says it will deliberate on the matter at its meeting on Tuesday, August 18th, and announce its position from there.

The move comes after weeks of mounting pressure over the deal, from union leaders protesting outside BTL’s headquarters following this month’s board vote, to the BCCI calling the transaction a foregone conclusion pushed through ahead of proper regulatory safeguards, to cabinet ministers themselves saying they’re withholding comment until they receive an official briefing.
