Can Man’s Best Friend Read Your Mood? Science Says Yes!

Scientists at the University of Vienna have discovered that dogs can read and respond to human emotions directly in their brains.

Using machine learning to analyse full-brain scans, researchers tracked how pet dogs reacted to images of human faces displaying happiness, anger, fear, and sadness. Brain regions linked to higher cognitive functions and reward processing were activated exclusively by pictures of happy faces.

Scans showed that dogs can differentiate between different negative emotions, but these expressions fail to trigger the brain’s reward centres. The scans also reveal distinct patterns for fear, anger, and sadness, showing direct evidence that dogs can tell these moods apart.

Study authors Laura Cuaya and Raúl Hernández-Pérez explained that generations of living alongside humans have changed dogs’ brains through domestication. These changes allow dogs to develop the social abilities required to understand and cooperate with humans, meaning a smile from a person serves as a direct reward for a dog.

Researchers built their study group by approaching owners of well-behaved pets in local parks, while also including their own border collies, Odín and Kun-kun.

The team also noted key limitations: the sample size was small, the dogs viewed photos instead of live faces, and animals raised in loving homes might respond differently than those from other backgrounds.

The study forms part of ongoing research into how dogs interpret human language and behaviour. They also plan to investigate how dogs combine facial expressions with body language, voice nuances, and scent to interpret the people around them.
