Carballo Faces Life as Guilty Plea Decision Looms

Anthony Carballo Junior now knows the prison term he could face if he admits to the 2023 murder of twenty-year-old Sylvian Nigel Swift, but he has not yet decided whether to plead guilty. Justice Nigel Pilgrim today issued a maximum sentencing indication, telling Carballo that a guilty plea to murder could result in life imprisonment, with no possibility of parole until he has served at least twenty years. Carballo, represented by attorney Nazira Myles-Espat, has until Friday, October twenty-third, to tell the High Court whether he will accept that indication and enter a guilty plea. Before arriving at the potential sentence, Justice Pilgrim considered the agreed facts of the case, the sentencing framework for murder and the relevant aggravating and mitigating factors. That framework includes life imprisonment, a fixed prison term and, in some cases, a minimum period ranging from thirty-five to thirty-seven years before parole eligibility. Carballo requested the sentencing indication on September twenty-ninth to learn the maximum penalty he could face if he pleads guilty. He and Christopher Pitts Junior are jointly charged with murdering Sylvian Nigel Swift, who police say was shot by two men on a motorcycle near his Belize City home in April 2023. Authorities charged both men in May of that year, and the High Court jointly indicted them in 2025. While Carballo considers his next move, Pitts is maintaining his not-guilty plea and is expected to stand trial before a judge without a jury.
