Caye Caulker Teacher Says No to Weed Legalisation

A teacher with more than two decades of experience is among those opposing the legalisation of cannabis on the island.

Eidey Navarrette says her decision to vote “No” in today’s referendum comes from concern for the island’s children. “I’m here today to support the no side because we don’t want this to be in our island to be legalised,” she said.

Navarrette believes legalisation could have long-term social consequences. “My concern is, of course, the future, the children,” she said. “This is not only about now, but also what’s gonna happen in the future.”

After 24 years in the classroom, Navarrette says she has witnessed first-hand the effects of drug use on young people. “Lot’s of problems at home, domestic violence because of the use of drugs.”

Her comments come as Caye Caulker residents vote in a historic referendum that could see cannabis production and sale legalised on the island.

Voting closes at 6 p.m.
