CCC Teachers Call in Sick: Third Day of No Classes
Corozal Community College is closing its doors for a third consecutive day as teachers escalate protests over delayed salaries. This time staff staged a sickout.
Staff members have stated that they will not return to work until their salaries are paid and a formal meeting takes place with members of the board.
On Monday, teachers walked out of classrooms with the support of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU). The union told News 5 it continues to support the teachers.
In a letter sent to the Board on Tuesday, staff said there was “a divisive work environment.”
They further wrote that “withholding pay from the entire staff due to one individual’s absence is not only unjust but also indicative of a lack of problem-solving skills.”
The letter called for an independent external audit of the college’s finances and demanded the finance officer’s removal. Staff also requested a meeting with the Board and warned that trust in the Finance Department has been “irreparably compromised.”
“His actions have irreparably compromised the trust and confidence of the faculty and staff, and we can no longer work effectively under his leadership of the Finance Department,” the letter read.
Sources tell News 5 that this has also been affecting the junior college of the institution.
