Central American Games Torch Makes Stop in Belize
The Central American Games Torch made its way to Belize on Saturday and was welcomed with a ceremony at the Belize Olympic House in Belize City.
Athletes who will represent Belize at the 2025 Games were presented at the ceremony.
George Pastor Jr., Chief of Mission for the Central American Games 2025, said the torch represents “unity through sports.” The flame began its journey in Panama on September 8 and has since travelled through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize this weekend.
From Belize, it continued to Petén, Guatemala, where the games will be hosted this year. Guatemala will be featuring 34 disciplines, compared to 19 at the last Games in Nicaragua in 2018.
Pastor described the torch relay as “historic,” stating, “It’s our first torch run for the Central American Games, so this is the first time we’re having a torch travelling through the Central American countries for the Central American Games,” he said. “We’ve had torch runs before, but for the Commonwealth Games.”
According to Pastor, Belize will send its largest delegation yet to the Games. “We’re participating in 19 disciplines, and we’re also taking 140 athletes along with officials, so it will be almost 180 strong,” Pastor added.
