Central Bank of Belize Dispels Misinformation

The Central Bank of Belize is reassuring the public that mutilated versions of the newly issued 2025 banknotes remain valid and exchangeable, following misinformation circulating about their acceptance.

In a statement, the Bank clarified that it has not instructed any commercial banks, credit unions, or financial institutions to reject damaged currency. Instead, holders of mutilated notes may exchange them at any local commercial bank, credit union, or directly at the Central Bank for assessment and replacement.

The Central Bank also reminded the public that it is a criminal offence to deliberately mutilate or deface currency. Section 197 of the Criminal Code of Belize states that any person found guilty of damaging or defacing a currency note can face a fine of up to $250.

The Central Bank urges all citizens to treat Belizean currency with care and respect,” the release added.
