Chemical Spill on George Price Highway Under Investigation

Authorities in Belize are investigating a chemical spill after a cargo truck overturned late Wednesday night near Mile 60 on the George Price Highway.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) said the incident occurred between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on April 1, 2026, when the truck lost control and its trailer overturned, releasing several gallons of insecticides. The chemicals, identified as Bifen and Permethrin, are commonly used for termite and ant control.

“Immediate response actions were undertaken at the scene to contain the spill, including the careful collection and secure handling of contaminated soil to minimise potential environmental impact,” the DOE said in a statement.

The DOE, working with the Pesticides Control Board, has launched an on‑site investigation to determine the ownership of the cargo and whether proper permits were in place for the importation and transport of the chemicals.

No injuries were reported, and currently, “further assessments are ongoing, including determining the appropriate method for the safe disposal or treatment of the affected materials.”
