Community Shaken as Arnaldo Vellos Gunned Down in Corozal

Was seventy-two-year-old Arnaldo Vellos caught up in an illicit drug operation in Corozal? That’s the question police are now investigating after Vellos was gunned down outside his home early Friday morning. Reports say he was about to leave his yard when several men ambushed him, firing multiple shots. The brutal killing has shaken the community, not only because Vellos was well-known, but also because he’s the uncle of Corozal Mayor Rigoberto Vellos. Tonight, many are asking, what could have motivated such a cold-blooded execution? Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero shares what investigators know so far.

“On Friday, the thirty-first day of October 2025, police responded to a shooting incident in Corozal. They went to an area called Finca Solana. They learned that male person had been shot. The person was identified as Arnaldo Vellos. He was taken for treatment to the hospital. Thereafter, he succumbed to his injuries. Investigation revealed that Vellos was heading towards his vehicle when he was approach by two male persons, one who pulled out FIM and fired several shots towards his direction causing his fatal injuries. We are seeking three suspects in regards to this murder.”

“That is the information we’re receiving, this drug related.”

“So this was a basically a targeted vehicle?”

“Yes. He was targeted while he was going to his vehicle near his residence.”

“Yes. He’s known to police.”
