Court Hears New Child Rape Allegations Against Suspended Policeman

An already suspended police officer is once again behind bars, facing a fresh set of disturbing allegations involving a child. Dexter Diego, who has been out on bail since 2023 on charges of sexual offenses against a minor, returned to court this afternoon on new and more serious allegations, this time for rape. Diego, a Dangriga native, appeared shortly after 2:30 p.m. before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, where he was formally charged with four indictable counts of child rape. Prosecutors allege that three of the incidents occurred in December 2024, when the child was ten years old, and that a fourth incident took place in 2025, when the child was eleven. Unrepresented in court, Diego was informed that bail was not an option. The offenses fall under Section 16 of the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act, which leaves magistrates no discretion to grant bail. He was therefore remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where he will remain until his next court appearance on July eighth, 2026. This is not Diego’s first encounter with the courts. In August 2023, he was arraigned on five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a fourteen year old. That case was later committed to the High Court for trial and remains pending. With today’s charges, Diego now faces allegations involving two separate minors and nine alleged sexual offenses spanning multiple years. As the case moves forward, today’s charges once again spotlight serious questions about accountability and how well the justice system protects its most vulnerable.
