Dangriga Basketball Player Shot Dead in Belize City

Twenty-five-year-old Antonio Flowers, a Dangriga tour guide and basketball player, was shot dead in Belize City on Sunday Night.

Flowers was in the Antelope Street Extension area, near Sister Mary Benedict Street, when he was shot. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Flowers was a member of the Griga Dream Ballers in the Belize Elite Basketball League. His death has left the team mourning the loss of a young athlete who was known both on and off the court.

Carolyn Jang, the Dream Ballers’ social media personnel, said the team was devastated by the news. “We’re actually shocked to hear it. It’s devastating. There are just no words that I can say, honestly,” she said.

Jang described Flowers as someone who brought energy to the team and encouraged his teammates to perform at their best.

“Tony was a very jovial person. Workouts were always fun with him around. No matter what happens with the team, he was always there to motivate everyone, to let them do better on game days.”

She said Flowers was also an important player for the team, particularly when he came off the bench.

“He was aggressive on the court. He was our sixth man. He was our best sixth man and when he came off the bench, he did whatever he had to do to ensure the team was successful in the game.”
