Dangriga Mayor Engages Western Dairies On Dangriga Firings

Last week, four Garifuna women were let go from Western Dairies in Dangriga, sparking public concern and calls for answers. Since then, local leaders have been meeting with both the women and the company’s management to get to the bottom of what happened. We spoke with Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano, who shared the steps being taken and the ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the situation.

“I was following up on the Western Dairies incident. Have you been able to communicate with the women that were fired? What’s the update there?”

“Yes, I have. I had communication with them the day when the incident occurred. And we also had a public consultation as well, and they were a part of it. From the first day the information reached out to me. I tried to reach out to the management of Western Diaries and finally last Wednesday they came forward and met with me. However, the decision before anything can be made must be discussed with the other members because we have a team from different stakeholders here in Dangriga and so we’ll be coming together to discuss what was discussed with the management of the company. And so we will be making a decision then. It is not something that I’ll be making on my own.”
