Delecia Flowers Murdered in Home Invasion

Another brutal attack has shaken Belize City. Early Friday morning, a home invasion turned deadly on Complex Avenue. Thirty-five-year-old Delecia Flowers was found beaten and slashed to death inside her home, while her teenage daughter survived with head injuries. The violence comes just days after the horrific arson that claimed the lives of Angelita Magaña and her two children—an incident that sparked nationwide outrage. Tonight, the question looms: why does violence against women keep happening? News Five’s Britney Gordon has the story.

Thirty-five-year-old Delecia Flowers has become Belize’s tenth female murder victim this year and shockingly, the third case of femicide in just one week. Her death follows the brutal killing of Angelita Magaña and her two children, a tragedy that’s still fresh in the nation’s mind. Reports say Flowers and her daughter were at home when an intruder broke in, turning what should have been a safe space into a scene of horror.

Neighbors on Complex Avenue say tensions were brewing just hours before the deadly attack. Witnesses report that around six on Thursday evening, Delecia’s teenage son and daughter got into a heated altercation outside their home; an incident involving at least six other young men. Some even claim threats were hurled at the family during the clash. Earlier that day, the teen girl was allegedly caught up in another fight. Tonight, police aren’t ruling anything out, they’re digging into every possible motive.

“Do Police have a suspect?”

ASP Stacy Smith

“Police have been speaking to persons in the area in the interest of identifying the person who is said to have committed this very heinous offense and the department certainly expresses its condolences to the family, and we have dispatched a investigative team into this matter, and we are ensuring that the necessary psychosocial help and all of the different social intervention resources are made available to this family..”

Belize has seen a concerning rise in violence against women in the recent months, with approximately three hundred incidents reported between August and September. So far, there are no suspects in the investigation, and the family of Delecia Flowers is calling on the government to increase protection for women in violent situations.

“The system, it corrupted and I think the government, di police, weh you think? Ney bally could just go da jail go sit down when my sister di get buried? I think unu need fi do something with ney man.”

At this time, Delecia’s daughter remains hospitalized, and the community shaken. As the investigation continues into who committed this heinous act, Belizeans are speaking up to condemn violence against women and uniting in the fight to end it. Britney Gordon for News Five.
