Digi Posts Record $36.9 Million Profit

Digi may have failed to acquire its biggest competitor, but the company is still celebrating a banner year. It recorded a historic thirty-six point nine million dollars in net income, a thirty-one percent increase, while earnings per share climbed to seventy cents. So, what does Public Utilities Minister Michel Chebat make of Digi’s record performance just weeks after its Speednet deal collapsed? We asked him.

“You know I am glad that they are making a profit, after the seven hundred million dollars of taxpayers funds that Dean Barrow paid for it, we need to find a way at some point in time to recuperate those monies. BTL is the national telecom, whether we want to accept it or not. Belizean taxpayer funds have been invested into that company and I think we have a reason and we have to ensure that BTL survives so that when they are making profits, kudos to them. I have heard you say many times that you have new entrants into the telecom market and I can tell you that there will be new entrants into the telecom market. But we need to make sure that BTL survives no matter where the attacks come from.”

BTL achieved these results despite covering the cost of an old severance issue it inherited.
