Residents of Duck Run 1 Village in the Cayo District now have access to a new polyclinic and hurricane shelter following an official handover ceremony held on Thursday.

The government partnered with the International Organization for Migration to complete the project, valued at more than $1.5 million.

The facilities were handed over to the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the people of Duck Run 1 as part of a wider initiative aimed at strengthening climate resilience and improving living conditions in western Belize communities.

The project, titled “Building Climate Change Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced People in Settlements of Western Belize,” was launched in February 2022 with funding from the European Union totaling BZ$4.6 million.

The initiative targeted six communities in western Belize, including Santa Familia, Billy White, Los Tambos, Duck Run 1, Duck Run 2, and Duck Run 3.

Project works included the construction of five hurricane shelters and community centers, upgrades to water systems, drainage improvements, procurement of firefighting equipment, and training for community health workers.
