Education Leaders Map Out Next Five Years

The future of education in Belize is under the microscope this week. The Ministry of Education kicked off a two-day Education Sector Plan meeting today, taking a hard look at where the system stands and where it’s headed. Stakeholders will review the BESPlan 2021–2025, dig into key findings from the latest sector analysis, and set priorities for the next five-year cycle, 2026 to 2030. It’s a critical conversation that could shape classrooms and policies for years to come. We spoke with Education Minister Oscar Requena about what’s on the table.

Oscar Requena, Minister of Education

“What we are having over the next two days is a joint sector review of our education system, where we are and where we want to go. We are completing the 2021-2025 plan, so what we are doing is analyzing what has been achieved, the accomplishment, successes. We are also looking at the challenges moving forward. And as a part of this process, we have also appreciated the process of putting together the best plan for 2026, 2030. So today is day one and the analysis of the data shows that there has been a significant improvement in many areas, for example enrollment of students at all levels, preprimary all the way to tertiary.”
