Elderly Man Fatally Run Over in OW
Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of a Santa Marta resident on Tuesday evening in northern Belize.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on the Old Northern Highway in Santa Marta Village, Orange Walk District. Police responded to the scene at about 6:48 p.m., where they found the lifeless body of a man lying on the roadside with multiple injuries. A Mack dump truck was seen parked approximately 20 feet away.
Initial investigations reveal that 36-year-old Nelson Osman Pech, a truck driver from Santa Marta, had parked his dump truck off the edge of the road and exited briefly. When he returned and drove off, his brother reportedly alerted him to stop. Upon checking, Pech discovered that he had accidentally run over 67-year-old Julio Flota, a labourer of the same village.
Flota was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
