Ellis Meighan Faces Murder and Attempted Murder Charges
For over a year, he managed to stay one step ahead of the law, running, hiding, and evading capture. But last week, the chase came to an end. Thirty-three-year-old Ellis Meighan was extradited back to Belize, and this morning, under tight security, he was escorted by GI3 officers to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. At around 9:40 a.m., Meighan appeared before the court unrepresented, where he faced four serious charges, including murder for the shooting death of Roy Lee Burgess in Placencia back in April 2024. He was also charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm in connection with the shooting of American national Maia James, who was struck in the head but miraculously survived. Due to the gravity of the offenses, bail was denied, and Meighan was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 6, 2025. Now, the scene outside the courthouse was tense. GI3 officers halted traffic on Coney Drive for a few moments as they secured the perimeter and prepared to move Meighan.

Several known figures loitering nearby were ordered to stand down as the escort vehicle reversed out of the compound, followed closely by a second mobile unit. Just before being whisked away, Meighan exchanged a few words with his sister, who stood under a tent outside the court. She called him by his nickname, “Juice.” Interestingly, these charges were brought without an identification parade ever being held. We’ve learned that Maia James, the key witness, was flown into the country to participate in the ID parade, but due to multiple delays, it never happened. For her safety, she was flown back out, but sources say she will return. Meighan, for his part, has reportedly refused to participate in the ID parade. He’s accused of being the gunman who killed Roy Lee Burgess and shot Maia James, a friend of Burgess, in what police believe was a targeted attack. Ellis Meighan is the brother of Tyrone Meighan, who was recently gunned down in the Lakeview area of Belize City.”
