Escape Attempt Ends in Paralysis, Prisoner Back Behind Bars
Last week, a daring escape attempt took a dramatic turn when thirty-year-old Nyere Parchue was shot in the head by guards at the Belize Central Prison. Now, his life has changed forever; Parchue is paralyzed from the waist down. But was the gunshot the cause of his paralysis? And with just four weeks left on his sentence, will he still have to serve that time? News Five reached out to Virgilio Murillo, CEO of the Kolbe Foundation, who clarified that the paralysis wasn’t caused by the gunshot wound. Murillo also confirmed that Parchue is back behind bars, now housed in the prison’s medical facility as he serves out the remainder of his sentence.

“Yes that is so. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down.”

“What do you understand led to this? Was it as a result of the gunshot he received while trying to escape?”
On the Phone: Virgilio Murillo
“Absolutely not, the doctors at KHMH found that it was caused by a fractured spine. Apparently, he sustained the fracture when he fell off the fence.”
Paul Lopez
“How high is the fence?”
On the Phone: Virgilio Murillo
“That fence is approximately twenty feet high. Certainly we have him currently at the prison’s medical center at this time, being cared for. We will just have to handle the situation. He certainly has to serve out the three months, especially that he tried to escape while he was in our custody. It is a violation of not only the criminal law, but also of the prison rules. So he will definitely need to stick it out until his three months expires.”

“Is it possible that he could face additional charges related to his attempt to escape?”
On the Phone: Virgilio Murillo
“He certainly can if the police so chooses to press further charges against him. We are going to offer him the care he needs while he is here. We can still certainly face additional charges. That is up to the police. We will do everything to ensure that he is comfortable, and his needs are met.”
According to C.E.O Murillo, Parchue is expected to remain admitted inside the prison’s health facility until his release date.
