Seven-Year EU Health Program Wraps Up in Belize
Belize’s health sector is marking a milestone following the closure of a major European Union supported program aimed at improving the country’s medical facilities for the past seven years. Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard, says the initiative has transformed hospitals and clinics across the nation, making them greener, smarter, and more climate resilient. Investments totaled over twenty million dollars, covering everything from solar systems and generators to upgraded equipment and infrastructure. The improvements have enhanced both the quality of care for patients and the working conditions for healthcare professionals. Facilities across the six districts have been completely modernized, reflecting a dramatic change from their previous state. The program’s closure now sets the stage for further development, including expanded services, new hospitals, and improved access for all Belizeans. Minister Bernard spoke exclusively about the achievements and the road ahead for the health sector.

“Well, one of the things I think that we are here today to celebrate is the fact that we had a very successful project sponsored by the EU over the past seven years. As highlighted, it started back in 2018 and continued under our administration. And under my leadership, I think we have accomplished many much activities within this project. One of the things that you’ve seen highlighted in the presentations is that the fact that we’re able to move many of our facilities into more green and smart facilities, making it more climate resilient at the same time, improving infrastructure in Punta Gorda, in Orange Walk, in the community hospital. And so we are able to provide a better service to the Malaysian people who access those services. And it’s about over $20 million invested, or 8.8 million euros that was invested in this project over the seven years. From solar system to generators, to improve equipment, improve infrastructure, as I said. But what this translates to is to better quality of service for the Belizean people.”
