Family Seeks Blood Donations for Shooting Victim 

Alfred Mahler is receiving treatment after he was shot during a land inspection in Western Belize on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, Mahler and another man were inspecting land in the Maya Ranch area between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. when they were approached by a grey pickup. A red pickup then followed them along Pine Ridge Road, and shots were fired.

The red pickup fled the scene, and police have since detained one person and seized a licensed .223 semi-automatic rifle.

Mahler’s aunt, Sandra Mahler, says he underwent surgery Wednesday night after the bullet caused serious damage to his abdomen. “They had to remove some of his organs because the bullet really did a damage in his stomach,” she said.

Sandra Mahler says Alfred is now at the Belmopan Hospital and in critical but stable condition.

“He needs blood, a lot, because he lost a lot of blood,” she said.

The family is appealing for blood donations to help with his treatment. Alfred Mahler is O positive, but donations of any blood type are being accepted due his condition.

His aunt says the family is hoping to get at least 22 donors and is asking people across the country to donate through blood banks wherever they are available.
