FC Player Latrell Middleton Apologises For Kicking Dog

Progresso FC player Latrell Middleton issued a public apology the day after a viral video showed him landing a kick at a dog during a Premier League of Belize playoff match on Saturday night in the Cayo District.

In an online statement, Middleton said he apologised to “the public, to animal lovers, to the fans of Progresso FC, and to the wider football community.”

“I made a decision that I now truly regret,” he stated. “I understand that there is no excuse for harming an animal.” According to Middleton, he “does not support or condone animal cruelty in any form.”

On Sunday, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) condemned the act and described it as “unacceptable and contrary to the values and principles of football.”

The federation confirmed the matter will be referred to its Disciplinary Committee to determine possible sanctions.

The video triggered public outrage online. One user wrote that the incident reflected the current issues of animal abuse in Belize. Another criticised the match organisers and called the dog’s presence at a championship match “a serious lapse in responsibility”.
