Five Ways to Stop Thieves from Taking Your Motorcycle
Data from the National Crime Fusion Center shows motorcycle theft remains a serious problem across parts of the country, according to the Belize Police Department.
According to the data, most bikes are stolen between 12:01 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., with Saturdays flagged as a high-risk day. In June 2025, two men were captured on surveillance stealing a motorcycle from a West Canal residence in Belize City at approximately 3 in the morning. Meanwhile, in January this year, an employee’s motorcycle was stolen in broad daylight from New Flags Supermarket in Santa Elena.
Here is what police want every rider to know:
- Double up on locks
“Using more than one type of lock acts as a significant deterrent to thieves,” the police department advised. Combine a steering lock with a heavy-duty chain or disc lock. - Anchor it down
Secure your bike to something fixed and immovable. If it is not anchored, it can be lifted into a vehicle in minutes. - Think about where you park
No garage? Choose a bright, visible area. Darkness gives thieves cover. - Cover the bike
A plain cover hides the make and model from anyone scouting for targets. - Report Suspicious
Report anyone loitering near parked motorcycles or surveying neighbourhoods.
Police say small steps can prevent a costly loss.
