Flood Alert in Effect: Up to 4 Inches of Rain Possible Over the Next Four Days
A flood alert is in effect across Belize, with an increased potential for flooding and flash flooding over the next four days.
The Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change says approximately two to four inches of rain are possible over portions of the country. Periods of locally heavy rainfall could produce rapid runoff, localised flash flooding, flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, and rising river levels.
The ministry says several rivers are currently at normal or below-normal levels, but more rain could cause smaller streams and tributaries to rise quickly. Larger river systems may respond more gradually as rain accumulates. It says particular attention should be given to rivers that are already elevated or approaching bankfull levels.
In its evening forecast, the ministry listed the Belize River as above normal more tomorrow, though below normal on its way to the coast, including Crooked Tree Lagoon. Gales Point Lagoon, the Moho River and the Temash River are rising and above normal, and the Sarstoon River is above normal. The Sittee River is rising toward bankfull levels.
The Mopan River has seen a moderate increase from below-normal levels, and the Sibun River is rising from below-normal. The Macal River is below spillway levels. The Rio Hondo and the Monkey and Deep Rivers are near normal, the New River is below normal to normal, and the Rio Grande is below normal. All other rivers are below normal.
Residents in low-lying, flood-prone and riverside communities are advised to stay alert and monitor official weather and flood updates, as conditions may change rapidly. The ministry is urging caution near rivers, streams and low-level crossings and warns people not to attempt to cross flooded roads or waterways.
