Former BEL Workers Join Growing Severance Movement
Former employees of Belize Electricity Limited are stepping into a growing national battle over severance pay. In November 2025, the Caribbean Court of Justice handed down a landmark ruling in favor of former Belize Telemedia Limited workers, declaring that severance is a legal right under the Labour Act and cannot be replaced by pension benefits. That decision set a strong precedent and has since energized other worker groups who say employers also owe them compensation for years of service. The Belize Communications Workers for Justice have led the charge, pressing for full severance payments with interest following the ruling. Now, former BEL workers have joined the movement under the banner of the Belize Energy Workers for Justice. At a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, they plan to publicly demand what they say the law guarantees them. As the CCJ’s ruling continues to reshape the labor landscape, this latest push could mark a significant new chapter in the expanding fight for workers’ rights and accountability in Belize.
