Former UDP Cabinet Secretary and Senator Henry Gordon passed away at the age of 83 on Friday.

Gordon served as Cabinet Secretary in the 1990s and later as UDP Secretary General. After the party’s 2008 landslide win, he was elected Church Senator by the Council of Churches and the Evangelical Association of Churches. Before entering politics, he was a chief meteorologist and a respected pastor.

“Mr. Gordon served with commitment, integrity, and a deep sense of duty. His contributions to public life will be remembered with respect and sincere appreciation,” said UDP Leader Tracy Panton in an online statement on Sunday.

Church Senator Louis Wade, who was mentored by Gordon, described him as a guiding influence. “It is a very big loss because he was one of my mentors. I knew him first through his writing in Amandala,” Wade said.

“He understood the times, like Daniel who walked both the halls of power, yet had a relationship with God. That is how I saw Henry Gordon and so he was always someone I looked up to,” Wade added. “He would constantly say that the Bible and the Constitution worked together to build a democratic nation… I am trying my best to walk in the giant footsteps of my mentor.”

Gordon is survived by his wife, Ann; four children; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at Bethany Baptist Church, Belize City, on Saturday, January 10, at 1:00 PM.
