French Students Protest Over School Conditions

French students have taken to the streets to protest what they say are worsening conditions in the country’s high schools, with demonstrations now spreading across the country.

The protests began in the Paris region in mid-September, after students raised concerns about teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings.

More than 266,000 people took part in demonstrations across France, according to the Interior Ministry, and in Paris alone, the ministry estimated that 56,000 people participated.

Students say they are dealing with classes of more than 30 students, absent teachers and school buildings that need repairs. Some have also raised concerns about overloaded schedules and the pressure surrounding France’s university admissions system.

The demonstrations have also led to confrontations with police. More than 500 schools have been closed or disrupted, while thousands of people have been arrested since the protests began.

The clashes between students and police have also led to tense scenes on the streets. During Tuesday’s demonstrations, Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis, was seen standing between student protesters and police as tensions rose. He was later affected by tear gas.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has acknowledged the students’ concerns while condemning violence and damage to schools.

According to the French government, 24 high schools have been damaged by fires or vandalism, with repair costs estimated at up to 30 million euros.

The protests are expected to continue as students call for more resources, smaller classes, more teachers and better school facilities.
