From Scholarships to Sustainability: OAS and Belize Deepen Collaboration

Belize’s relationship with the Organization of American States is being described as excellent and officials say there’s room to make it even stronger. From scholarships and training programs to environmental initiatives, the OAS has been a key partner for Belize. And with the 5Cs headquartered right here, there’s even more potential for collaboration on climate and sustainability. Politically, Belize continues to share the OAS vision of democracy, good governance, and strong institutions. So, what’s next for this partnership? That’s the conversation on the table.

Albert Ramdin, Secretary General, OAS

“The relationship between Belize and the OAS is an excellent one. We see that many projects that the OAS can offer are utilized in Belize as well, scholarships, trainings in the private sector. More can be done, and this is a discussion which we will have with Belize’s permanent Representative to the OAS. I maintain that every member state benefits to the highest possible ways of the OAS, what the OAS can offer. Much more than functional cooperation, Belize has also a good example in terms of environmental management. We can benefit from that. Having the 5Cs here creates opportunities for collaboration, there is already collaboration between the 5Cs and our environmental departments. So, given the fact that the relationship is an excellent one, it can only mean that we take it to the next level. From a political perspective I think Belize shares and is committed to the original purpose of the OAS in terms of democracy, strong electoral organization, good governance, making sure that there’s a strong but independent judiciary, making sure that civil society is also engaged and that can only bode well for a stronger society as a whole.”
