Frustrated Villagers Fund Their Own Road Repairs

Residents from Little Belize, Viva Esperanza, and Chunox are taking matters into their own hands this week to fix the crumbling roads in their communities. Frustrated by years of poor conditions, locals have pooled funds and hired machinery to begin repairs on key routes that have long been neglected.

Back in February, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development, and Housing, along with Corozal Area Representative Florencio Marin Jr, provided some assistance to improve road access. However, villagers say the work was incomplete, and many stretches remain in poor shape. Now, they’re calling on the government to prioritise upgrades from San Estevan to Chunox.

In speaking with News Five, resident Franz Olfert shared how community members have stepped up. “We already have like $5,000 from Little Belize village, and we have like $1,000 from Chunox. But that’s far from enough to fix it regularly,” he said.

Villagers hope their initiative will prompt further government involvement and long-term solutions.
