General Legal Council Suspends Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington
Tonight, there’s a major decision from the General Legal Council: Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington has been suspended from practicing law for six months. The ruling comes after the Council found him guilty of grave professional misconduct. According to the decision, Elrington accepted six thousand dollars from a client to file a claim against a bank, but never filed the case, failed to keep the client updated, and even broke an earlier promise to repay the money. The council says his excuses didn’t hold up. In addition to the suspension, Elrington must pay back the full six thousand dollars, and if he doesn’t, the suspension could be extended. The council stressed that this sanction is about protecting public trust in the legal profession. Elrington, who has practiced law for 50 years, now faces one of the toughest penalties short of being struck off the roll.
