Global Credit Firm to Help Belize Launch New Credit System

The Central Bank of Belize has teamed up with CRIF (Center for Research in International Finance), a company that builds credit systems around the world, to manage Belize’s new credit reporting system set to launch in 2026.

CRIF will collect and organise people’s credit history from banks, credit unions, moneylenders, utility companies, and insurers. This helps lenders know who they can trust to repay loans.

At a press conference held in Belize City, CRIF’s International Markets Director, Davide Meo, said the system will help small businesses and people who struggle to get loans. It gives them access to their own credit reports and helps build a financial reputation.

Meo added that most people are trustworthy borrowers. “The five percent of the population that is not included in trust can create issues for the rest of the population. So, our role is not to exclude anybody.”

The system is expected to reduce borrowing costs, boost confidence in lending, and strengthen the country’s financial system.
