Government’s Proposal to Resume Maya Airlines PG Flight

With Tropic Air preparing to end service to Punta Gorda, concerns have been growing among residents and businesses who rely on the route for travel and commerce. Government is now looking at options to ensure southern Belize remains connected and discussions are already underway with Maya Island Air to fill the gap. Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler says officials are exploring ways to support the route without a direct subsidy, including encouraging government agencies and statutory bodies to utilize the service and considering fuel-related support measures.

“Actually just a few hours ago I had some intense discussions with Maya led by Minister Martinez. And so hopefully we can come up with some agreement for them to fill the gap that Maya – Tropic left behind, right?”

“Will there be a need for some type of subsidized flight?”

Anthony Mahler

“I believe not subsidy, but say here what, we will ensure that our government workers or statutory boards support the flight. So we aren’t really talking about any subsidy, and maybe some fuel support in terms o- of the taxes on that.”

Tropic Air’s last flight to Punta Gorda is scheduled for this Saturday, October thirty first.
