Gov’t Opens Floor:  Will Belizeans Speak Up on 13th Amendment?

The public will soon have its say on the Government’s proposed 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which has been a highly debated bill that critics warn could infringe on civil liberties.

The Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives has announced a public consultation to be held on Wednesday, July 16th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Swift Hall in Belize City.

The Committee says the session is part of its commitment to transparency and public engagement in the legislative process.

While Government maintains the amendment is a crime-fighting measure to strengthen the legal framework for States of Emergency, particularly in crime-affected zones. However, the Belize Association of Defence Attorneys, trade unions, and the Opposition have voiced concern.
