Grenada Joins World Meteorological Organization as 194th Member
Grenada has become the 194th member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), joining an international network that supports cooperation in weather forecasting, climate monitoring and early-warning systems.
Grenada’s membership took effect on October 18, after it deposited its instrument of accession to the WMO Convention, according to the organisation. The WMO now has 194 members: 188 Member States and six Member Territories, including Belize.
Grenada is vulnerable to severe weather and the effects of climate change. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl caused widespread devastation and disruption across the country.
As a new member, Grenada will be integrated into the WMO’s Regional Association for North America, Central America and the Caribbean and its Hurricane Committee.
It will also have access to services to improve forecasts and early warnings, strengthen its weather-observation network and develop institutional and technical capacity.
The Government of Belize has congratulated Grenada on its admission, describing the development as an important step towards strengthening regional and international cooperation in meteorology, climate and hydrology.
“These shared challenges underscore the importance of countries working together, pooling resources, exchanging knowledge, and strengthening technical cooperation to improve our collective capacity to respond to the effects of climate change,” Belize wrote.
The government added that it looked forward to continued collaboration with Grenada and other WMO and Caribbean Meteorological Organization members to strengthen early-warning capabilities, protect lives and livelihoods, safeguard property, and support sustainable development across the Caribbean.
