‘He Was My Everything’: Families Mourn Two Young Friends Killed In Motorcycle Accident
Two families are searching for answers after two young friends, 17-year-old Axel Cho and 15-year-old Jonathan Milian, were killed in a traffic accident near Belmopan on Saturday afternoon.
Police say the crash happened around 5:00 pm on the George Price Highway near mile 43, when a motorcycle driven by Cho entered the highway and collided with a tandem truck travelling toward Belmopan.
“It is reported that the driver of the tandem truck sought to avoid the collision, however the tail end of the bowser, which was attached to the tandem truck, made contact with the motorcycle, which resulted in the eventual demise of these individuals,” said ASP Stacy Smith.
The two had been friends since first form at Belmopan Comprehensive High School, and Saturday had simply been a day of hanging out together.
For Cho’s mother, Matilda Cho, the grief is as raw as it gets. “He was my oldest child and my everything,” she told News Five. “I had him at a young age, and he was the person that moulded me into what I am now.”
She described her son as obedient, joyful, and loved by everyone around him. Identifying his body at the hospital, she said, was something no mother should have to do. “I wish that it was a lie and that it wasn’t my son. And there he was with Jonathan, his best friend,” she said.
Matilda also called on police to come forward with more information, saying families deserve to know exactly what happened. Jonathan’s aunt echoed that frustration. She described her nephew as a bright young man with a clear sense of purpose, someone who loved horses and dreamt of one day building a home for his mother and two sisters.
“We have no clue what happened. I was seeking information from the police and they are turning me up and down,” she said.
Investigators have since served a notice of intended prosecution to the truck driver and extracted samples from him as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities also say that whoever knowingly handed over the motorcycle to the two teenagers committed an offence, and identifying that individual is now a key part of the investigation.
