A routine inspection by the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Technical and Enforcement Team on Thursday led to the discovery of heavy machinery operating in the north-western area of Ambergris Caye.

Inspectors reported finding a marine barge carrying a pontoon vessel, along with a hydraulic excavator that had already been offloaded and positioned on site. When officers requested permits and authorisations, no documentation was provided at the time of inspection. A representative from the Department of Environment (DOE) joined the inspection.

Hol Chan has since filed a report with the DOE, the Mining Department, the Fisheries Department, and other relevant agencies, while notifying the Area Representative.

The Reserve said it is following all established regulatory procedures and is now awaiting a response from the relevant authorities. However, the discovery has fueled strong reactions online, with many residents calling for greater accountability.

One social media user asked, “Who rented the barge and machinery? Who is paying the workers? Who owns the equipment?” While another alleged that mangroves may have been cleared to allow access for the excavator, which would constitute a serious environmental offence if confirmed.

Others questioned why operations were not immediately halted, arguing that equipment operating without permits should be shut down or confiscated rather than simply documented in a report.
