Help is on the Way for Belizean Students in Jamaica
Belizean students in Jamaica are getting help from home after Category 5 Hurricane Melissa wreaked havoc on the island. Relief supplies from the Government of Belize are on the way.
Before the hurricane made landfall, Belizean students were preparing for the storm. One law student, Isareli Cal, told News 5 that getting supplies was difficult. “It took like two trips to the grocery store to prepare, because it was just chaos outside. There were multiple things that we couldn’t get,” she said.
According to a statement by the Government of Belize, the relief package will benefit around 75 students. It includes hygiene items and canned food, sent aboard a Jamaica Defence Force aircraft that had sought safe harbour in Belize during the storm.
The supplies are to be distributed by Belize’s Honorary Consul in Kingston, Elecif Arthurs.
“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Jamaica for their care and support to our students during Hurricane Melissa. Belize remains committed to ensuring their well-being,” Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca said in the government statement.
